Two ships of diesel and two ships of petrol will be delivered from India in July as a solution to the fuel crisis and the Governments of Sri Lanka and India are in discussions to bring these four fuel tankers to Sri Lanka, government sources said.
The discussions took place between Sri Lankan High Commissioner to India Milinda Moragoda and Indian Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri at the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs in New Delhi Monday.
High Commissioner Milinda Moragoda has discussed urgent energy requirements of Sri Lanka with the Indian Minister according to the Sri Lankan High Commission in India.
The Government of India is currently assisting Sri Lanka in the face of severe economic and financial crisis and Sri Lanka has received over 400,000 metric tons of fuel with the assistance of the Government of India over the past three months.
High Commissioner Moragoda has already taken steps to brief Indian Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri on the grave challenges and difficulties faced by the people of Sri Lanka with regard to the supply and distribution of petroleum products.
The High Commissioner and the Minister have also discussed ways in which India and Sri Lanka could further expand cooperation in the petroleum sector to assist in overcoming the current crisis and ensuring energy security in Sri Lanka.
They have also discussed ways and means by which Sri Lanka can establish long-term relationships in the petroleum, oil, gas and related supply sectors.
