The fares of railway tickets will be increased from 12th July.
Accordingly, the minimum fare for a 3rd class ticket will be 20 rupees.
Railway fare increase gazette notification is expected to be released soon.
Last week, the Cabinet approved a proposal to increase railway fares and other railway charges.
The government says that with the recent increase in fuel prices, the recurrent losses of the Sri Lanka Railway Department have further increased and it has not been able to provide proper service.
Accordingly, a proposal was made to increase the railway fares which have not been revised in the last 5 years and other railway fares which have not been revised in the last 14 years.
